On Wednesday, the York University Lions women's volleyball team fell to the Ryerson Rams 3-1 at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
Their first set started off electric with the Lions scoring early and keeping the lead for the majority of the match. However, the Rams held their own as they had terrific chances. Both teams had an intense rally until the Rams came back and tied the game.
Olivia Kim scored an amazing kill, followed by a block from
Wesley-Ann Bailey and
Chiara Da Silva that helped them secure a win with a score of 25-20.
Â
The Rams wanted to redeem themselves and come out strong in the second set. They began to lead the Lions by four points with a score of 6-2. Later on, the lions came back to tie by scoring four points in a row; two kills from Kim, and two service aces from Da Silva, who both had 13 points each. Unfortunately, the Rams came back and scored five more points widening the gap, including a kill from Rams player Jasmine Rivest, ending the round 25-19 for the Rams.
Â
In the third set the Rams led early, but the Lions responded with great attacks from Bailey and Kim to make the score 7-4. The Rams maintained their lead for the entirety of the set, but the Lions attempted a comeback at 22-18 when Lions middle
Aleksandra Steins successfully blocked an attack from Rivest, followed by another failed kill that would make it a two-point game at 22-20. Ultimately, the Rams had the upper hand, and closed the set 25-21.
Â
In the fourth, it was the Lion's last chance to stay in the game, and they played hard, but the Rams played harder, and quickly gained the lead with a score of 7-4. Later on in the set, Lions
Jessica Reynolds and Steins successfully blocked an attempted kill from Rams Cailin Wark, followed by a fantastic kill from Reynolds tying the game at 11 apiece. Unfortunately, the Rams came back and scored four points to regain the lead in the set. Towards the end, the Lions came back to tie the game once again. Reynolds scored a kill and an ace followed by a lousy serve from the Rams to give the Lions a late lead. Unluckily, the Rams scored three points in a row beating the Lions with a score of 27-25.
Â
Lions setter Da Silva had a spectacular game with 38 assists, while Kim dropped 16 kills. Bailed tallied four total blocks, placing her second overall in the OUA with nine total blocks on the season.
Â
The Lions will look for their first win of the season when they play their next game this Saturday against the Lakehead Thunderwolves in Thunder Bay, Ont., at the Thunderdome gymnasium at 7pm.
