LIONS TRIUMPH OVER WARRIORS 84-72 FOR THIRD WIN OF SEASON

On Sunday, the York University Lions women's basketball team picked up their third win of the season against the Waterloo Warriors 84-72 at the Tait Mckenzie Centre.

The Lions came out hard in the first quarter, causing a lot of turnovers and gaining fouls. The Lions saw even scoring from their lineup - Katrina Collins-Samuels led the team with five points in the quarter, while Cyanna King poured in four of her own. Megan Stewart and Jada Codrington each dropped a three-pointer ending the first 19-17 for the Lions.

In the second, the Lions aimed to keep their momentum going as they continued to dominate over the Warriors. Lions guard Emma Jonas picked up a basket and a foul to help the Lions keep their lead. Codrington scored consecutive three-point shots to help the Lions close the first half 45-35.

The Warriors began closing the gap in the third up until Lions forward Megan MacLeod scored consecutive baskets. Not long after Collins-Samuels had a phenomenal steal that led to a basket of her own. The Lions continued to run away with the quarter thanks to back-to-back three-pointers from Stewart, helping the team extend their lead, closing the quarter out 66-53.

The fourth quarter commenced, and with a victory in their grasp, they continued to dominate the game. The Lions were playing strong defence with MacLeod grabbing a rebound and a basket. In the final minutes of the game, they did not take their foot off the gas. The Warriors gave the Lions a foul late in the game that helped King finish off the game, giving the Lions 84-72 win.

With the win the Lions are now .500 on the season boasting a 3-3 record, placing them fourth in the central division.

The Lions play their next game this Friday on the road against the Toronto Varsity Blues at the Goldring Centre at noon.
