On Friday, the York University Lions women's volleyball team got back into the win column with a 3-0 sweep over the McMaster Marauders at Tait Mckenzie.
Â
In the first set, the Lions came out strong and took control early gaining five points in a row. Two kills from
Sarah Williams, a kill from
Olivia Kim, followed by a Marauders service error and an attack error helped the Lions pull away with the lead. Although the Marauders began to creep up to tie with four straight points of their own from Marina Vesovic. But two service aces and an attack error in favor of the Lions kept the Marauders at bay to close the first set 22-25 for the Lions.
Â
The Lions continued to dominate the set with back to back aces by Toronto native
Chiara Da Silva followed by a big kill from
Aleksandra Steins with an ace to follow. The Lions did not let up as they continued to take over the set with a strong kill from Williams. Unfortunately, the Marauders began to take the lead halfway through, but the Lions quickly regained control with a kill from Kim. With that, the Lions started to pull away with the lead off a massive kill from first-year
Jessica Reynolds, followed by an awesome kill from Steins to close the second set 25-19 for the Lions.
Â
In the final set of the game, the Marauders wanted to challenge the Lions and prevent them from taking a sweep. They came out hard, scoring four points in a row. A kill from Jessie Nairn and an attack error from the Lions followed with Narin's second kill and one from Kamila Harris. Fortunately, the Lions quickly gained their poise and came back to regain the lead with a string of blocks from
Wesley-Ann Bailey and Kim. Mistakes from the Marauders once again helped the Lions gain the edge. Steins and Da Silva continued to have excellent games as they blocked any of the Marauders' attempts to tie the set. Unfortunately, it didn't last long as they slowly began to come back to tie the set, and they did with the score at 20-20. The Lions broke the deadlock with a kill from Reynolds, and went on to score three more points to secure the set 25-21 and the 3-01 sweep.
Â
Williams led the team with nine kills, Kim added in eight of her own to go with 30 total attacks and 20 digs.
Â
The Lions aim to remain in the win column when they play their next game this Saturday in Peterborough, Ont. against the Trent Excalibur at 5pm.
