The No. 6 nationally ranked York University Lions women's hockey team lost 5-1 to the Windsor Lancers on Saturday at Canlan.
The Lancers, who had lost all eight of their games this season, managed to keep their cool throughout the high-intensity game against the Lions who were ranked No. 6 in the country.Â
The Lancers started off attacking the Lions' net as soon as the puck dropped, which resulted in them getting their first goal 10 seconds into the game. The Lions then attempted to answer their opponent's opening goal throughout the period firing a total of 11 shots on goal. However, it was only at 17:34 when
Kelsey McHolm was able to get a goal in during a power play with an assist from
Courtney Gardiner and
Kara Washer to tie the game 1-1 with Windsor.Â
In the second period of the game, the Lancers started off as they did in the first, scoring within the first minute of play and taking a 2-1 lead against York. The Lions weren't able to score in the second, though they had 13 shots on goal against the Lancers who only had seven.
The third period of the game saw the Lancers continue to attack the Lions' net. The Lions looked like they had a good chance at tying the score when
Kara Washer fired towards the net, however, the Lancers' Jaydlin Spooner blocked her shot.
York revved up their offense with three minutes remaining in the final period by removing goaltender
Juliana Thomson, however, the Lancers were able to get two additional goals in the last two minutes of play to take a massive 5-1 win against the Lions.
Spooner finished the game with 24 saves and was ultimately what kept the Lions from registering any other goals on Windsor.
The Lions are now 7-3 and the Lancers picked up their first win of the season against York and are now 1-8.
