The York University Lions men's hockey team beat the Windsor Lancers, the first-place team in the OUA West Division, 2 -1 on Saturday night in a shootout at Canlan Ice Sports.
It was
Mack Shields, York's standout fourth-year goaltender, who was ultimately able to keep the Lancers goalless in the first and third periods, overtime and the shootout to give the Lions their fourth win of the season. Shields had an incredible game, stopping a total of 34 shots-on-goal, three of them in the final battle in the shootout round.
The Lions
Justin Bean was the first and the only player of the two teams to get a goal in in the shootout, which helped secure York's win.
The first period of the game ended scoreless for both teams. The second period saw the Lancers score in the first three minutes of period, bringing the game to 1-0 lead for the visiting team. The Lions responded with three minutes remaining in the period as
Nik Malenica got a shot past the Lancers goaltender with an assists from
Peter De Coppi and
Jack Goranson.
The Lions and Lancers finished the second tied 1-1 and continued to be tied at the end of the third period, though the Lancers fired 15 shots on goal and the Lions had five. They went into overtime not being able to get a goal past one another.
The Lions and the Lancers continued the game in a shootout round where the Lions were able to not only outscore the Lancers, but completely block them from getting a goal into their net.
The Lions are now 4-4-1-0 after beating the Lancers, who dropped to 7-1-0-1 but remain atop the OUA West.
The Lions will be on the road for the next three games, starting with the Royal Military College of Canada Paladins on Friday, Nov 8 in Kingston, Ont. Game begins at 7pm.
