LIONS STRETCH LANCERS TO NAIL-BITTING FIFTH SET BUT FALL 3-2

On Saturday, the York University Lions women's volleyball team fell 3-2 to the Windsor Lancers on the road at the St. Dennis Centre.
 
The Lions came out strong, gaining the opening point with a kill from Scarborough, Ont., native, Olivia Kim. The Lions continued to lead until the Lancers gained three points from a serve ace and an error from the Lions. The swing in momentum gave the Lancers the edge to finish the first set 25-19 and continued to the second with a score of 25-21.
 
In the third, the winds began to turn as the Lions gained the lead early with a series of points. A kill from Kim and back-to-back kills from first-year Jessica Reynolds. The Lancers began to take the lead, but a kill from Wesley-Ann Bailey followed by errors from the Lancers helped the Lions win the set with 25-22.
 
The fourth set was just as intense as the Lancers scored early with a kill from Jenny Campbell, but the Lions quickly regained control as they dominated the set. A kill from Oakville, Ont., native, Sarah Williams, an ace followed by Lancer errors helped the Lions solidify their lead. The Lions were up 21-13 until a kill from Kim followed by multiple Lancer errors aided in the Lion's domination in the fourth set 25-14.
 
In the final nail-biting set the Lions struck first with a kill from Williams, Kim and a Lancer mistake. The Lancers came back swiftly with three kills in a row from Ally Winik to gain the lead. Both teams were jostling for the win, and the score was deadlocked at 12-12. In the final, the Lancers pulled out with a kill and an ace to finish the game off 12-15.
 
Kim came out on top for the Lions with 24 points, ranking her fourth in the OUA in kills per set with 3.46 and fifth in kills with 97. Williams followed behind with 14.5 points, while Bailey and Reynolds added 12 points apiece.
 
The Lions play their last game of the year at home against the RMC Paladins at 6pm on Friday.
