The York University Lions men's hockey team fell on the road on Thursday night to the Laurier Golden Hawks 5-2 at the Waterloo Rec Complex.
The Golden Hawks opened the scoring early with an unassisted goal by Danny Hanlon less than two minutes into the opening period. York would equalize before the first intermission off a power-play goal from
Braydon Buziak assisted by
Alex Mowbray and
Jeremy Lucchini to make the score 1-1.
In the second, back-to-back goals in the span of a minute gave the Golden Hawks room to breathe as they retook the lead. Mowbray would bring the Lions within one off another power-play goal assisted by Lucchini and
Brendan Browne, to make the score 3-2 heading into the third.
Despite being outshot 13-6 in the final frame, the score line reflected differently in favour of the Golden Hawks. A short-handed goal and an empty netter clinched it for the home side that closed out their fall schedule with a win.
Lions netminder
Mack Shields made 23 saves in the contest, while Golden Hawks' Matt Williams turned away 42 shots.
The Lions return to action on Friday night as they take on the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Fields at 7pm.
