On Friday, the York University Lions women's volleyball team swept the RMC Paladins 3-0 at home at the Tait McKenzie Centre.
Â
The Lions came out hard in the first set as they dominated the scoreboard early with a block from Ottawa native
Wesley-Ann Bailey followed by back-to-back service aces from
Tara Leithead and led for the majority. Lions'
Sarah Williams scored a quick kill against the Paladins, closing the first set 25-12.
Â
In the second set, the Lions came out just as hard as Williams scored the opening set and continued to pull away with the lead with two aces from
Chiara Da Silva. The Lions continued to roll over the Paladins. Bailey blocked any advances the Paladins tried to make and followed it with a kill. The score was 10-0, and the Paladins finally got on the scoreboard with an attack error.
Â
They started to gain some momentum as they got a kill of their own from Josephine Calverley. However, their wind didn't last long as the Lions came back to score another point from Scarborough native
Jessica Reynolds with a strong kill down the sideline as the Lions took the second set with 25-10.
Â
In the third set, the Lions once again opened up the scoring with a monster block from Bailey and Da Silva. The Paladins came back with a tie early from a few team errors, but the Lions regained their stride and forced the Paladins to make mistakes. Mvuezolo scored two back to back serve aces to give the Paladins the lead for the first time in the game. But their lead didn't last long as Bailey's serves aces were on a hot streak of three.
Â
The Lions carved themselves a one-point lead. A series of serve aces from
Kayla Clennon kept the game in hand for the Lions. Late in the set, the Paladins played hard and came back only down a point, but the Lions managed to pull through the third and final set 25-22.
Â
Olivia Kim had a phenomenal game leading the way with eight kills.
Â
The Lions end the calendar year with a win and play their first game of the new year on Jan. 11 at home against the Waterloo Warriors at 1pm.
