THREE SECOND-HALF GOALS LEAD LIONS PAST DINOS IN CONSOLATION SEMIFINAL

Three goals in an 18-minute span was just enough for the York University Lions men's soccer team to defeat the Calgary Dinos by a 3-2 score in their consolation semifinal match at the 2019 U SPORTS Men's Soccer Championship in Montreal.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Lions began applying significant pressure when the second half began and controlled play for large stretches of time. They were finally rewarded in the 61st minute. The ball was passed around at the top of the box and then Eddie Lay found Merci Yuma in front. Yuma held off a defender and kicked the ball past falling Calgary goalkeeper Jake Ruschkowski to tie the game at one apiece.

Minutes later, Milan Beader thought he had the go-ahead goal but the play was called offside. He was not to be denied, however, and in the 75th minute he received a pass from Omar Marzouk and tapped the ball into the net while on the run, giving the Lions their first lead of the tournament.

A little over one minute later and just as the snow started to fall, Yuma was at it again. Jon Alec Duenas crossed the ball into the front of the net where Yuma was charging in and he completed the easy tap-in to make the score 3-1.

The flurry of activity finally showed what the Lions are capable of after a difficult loss in the quarter-finals on Thursday and a slow first half. Their best chance in the opening 45 minutes came in the 31st minute when Lucas Puntillo fired a laser that beat Ruschkowski but not the crossbar. Instead, it was the Dinos who scored first on a goal by Derek Brust in the 26th minute.

York goalkeeper Mike Argyrides made two great saves right after his team's third goal, but he could not stop a pretty shot by Brust that sailed over his head and into the net to cut the lead to one. That was as close as the Dinos would get, however, and the Lions held on for the win.

For the second straight day, Argyrides was arguably the Lions' best player on the pitch. He made seven saves overall, including another beauty in the 57th minute in which he moved to his right to stop a shot in close by the far post.

Yuma was named York's player of the game for the second straight day. Calgary's Cristiano De Carvalho earned the honour for the Dinos.

The Lions will now play for fifth place on Saturday against the UBC Thunderbirds, who defeated the StFX X-Men 2-0 in the other consolation semifinal. The game begins at 12pm at CEPSUM in Montreal.
