On Saturday, the No. 7 nationally ranked York University Lion's Women's hockey team defeated the Western Mustangs with a score of 4-2 at the Canlan Ice Arena.
Â
The Lions came out strong, playing incredible offence and even better defence. In the first five minutes of the game, Lions
Tayler Murphy had a fantastic wrist shot that just went wide of the net — followed by an incredible defensive play by McHolm. Mustangs' forward Sydnee Baker went on a breakaway that was swiftly stopped by
Lauren Dubie. Later on in the period
Kelsey McHolm had another great shot on net that was hastily knocked wide from the Mustangs goalie Carmen Lasis. Lions
Madison Davey had a shot on net that barely went wide of the goal. Unfortunately, the Mustangs scored first from forward April Clark assisted by Emma Suiter and Baker in the final second of the first quarter ending it with the Lions trail with a 1-0 score.
Â
In the second Lions
Becky Higgs scored an unassisted goal in the first 42 seconds of the period that put wind in the squad's sails. Not long after, in the second minute, the Lions scored their second goal. This time from Washer and assisted by her teammates
Brooke Anderson and
Julia McLennan. Giving the Lions a 2-1 lead. Unfortunately, the lead did not last long as the Mustangs came back to score the tying goal from forward Jessie Sanghe assisted from
Olivia Kariunas.
Â
In the third period, the Mustangs were desperate for the comeback and tied the game, but thanks to the Lions' strong defence, it was not an easy feat.. The Lions struggles didn't last long as Davison dangled the Mustang defender to score a sweet goal to secure the Lions winner in the 14th minute to end the game with a score of 4-2 for the Lions.
Â
Davison now holds top spot for points in their league, followed by Washer for third place. Washer is also in a three-way tie for first place for the top goalscorer with five goals in the season thus far, followed by McHolm and Gardiner tied for second place with four goals apiece.
Â
The win gives the Lions their seventh straight victory, and have moved up to the top of the OUA standings. They will look to add to their streak next Saturday against the Waterloo Warriors at home at 7pm.
