The York University Lions women's basketball team beat the Lakehead Thunderwolves 82-57 on Saturday night to finish off their final game of 2019.
York's
Megan MacLeod had a stellar game, matching her season-high with 20 points against the Thunderwolves. Two of her teammates were also able to score in the double-digit range,
Katrina Collins-Samuels with 19 points and
Lauren Golding with 14.
MacLeod started off the game contributing a three-pointer after the Thunderwolves put the first two points on the scoreboard. It was again MacLeod who scored a layup to give the Lions their first lead at 5-2. For the remainder of the quarter, Golding and MacLeod fired significant points, however, the Thunderwolves finished with 27 points, while the Lions finished eight points behind at 19 for the first quarter.
In the second quarter of the game, the Lions dominated the Thunderwolves as they got 23 buckets while almost completely blocking the home-team from getting on the scoreboard as the Thunderwolves were only able to shoot a meagre six points in the second. This quarter started York's first big lead against Lakehead as they ended the quarter leading 42-33.
The third quarter saw the Lions score 24 points on the Thunderwolves' 13, giving them a 66-46 lead. In the final quarter, the Lions eased off on the scoring, getting 16 points in while the Thunderwolves struggled to find 11. The Lions finished with an incredible 25-point margin on Lakehead who are currently 2-10 this season while the Lions are now even at 6-6.
The Lions will be starting off the 2020 portion of their season on Jan. 8 as they take on the Brock Badgers at the Tait McKenzie Centre. Tip-off is at 6pm.
