The York University women's volleyball team were defeated 3-0 by the McMaster Marauders on Sunday afternoon at Burridge Gymnasium in Hamilton, Ont.
The Lions fell in three sets to the Marauders despite an early lead at the start of all three sets. The Lions opened the first set leading the Marauders up until their tenth point, 10-8, after a service ace by
Olivia Kim. The Marauders picked up a strong lead on the Lions, 16-10, after earning eight consecutive points. The strong lead led the Marauders to take the set 25-17.
The Lions once again led the Marauders throughout the first half of the second set. The Marauders tied the set 7-7, however the Lions earned five more points to lead the Marauders 12-7. The Marauders picked up their first lead on the Lions 17-16 and maintained their lead to win the second set 25-19.
The Marauders earned the first three points of the set to lead the Lions 3-0. The Lions were quick to reclaim their lead, 4-3, after two services aces by
Chiara Da Silva and a kill by
Cadence Currie. The Lions maintained their lead up until their 11
th point, however the Marauders came back and took the lead which they would hold for the remainder of the set. The Marauders finished strong to win the final set 25-16.
Olivia Kim led the Lions in points, earning 6.5 points, six digs, and one block. Da Silva earned six points, 16 assists, and nine digs, while
Celeste Witzell had six points and two digs. Leading the way for the Marauders was Jessie Nairn who earned 19 points, and three digs.
The Lions will be back at home on Feb. 16 to take on the Western Mustangs at Tait Mackenzie Centre. The game is scheduled to start at 1pm.
