YORK DROPS FINAL HOME GAME OF 2018-19 SEASON TO WINDSOR

The York University men's volleyball team were defeated by the Windsor Lancers 3-0 in their last home game of the regular season on Sunday afternoon at Tait Mackenzie Centre.

The Lions honoured four senior players prior to the game, Robert Thompson, Jules Mahawe, Tyler Covach, and Logan Mend. Despite the loss, the Lions are still in a playoff position, sitting in fourth-place in the OUA East standings.

The start of the first set was close, as both the Lions and the Lancers were tied a total of seven times. A service error by the Lions allowed the Lancers to enter the mid-set break leading 16-13. The Lions added the first two points after the break with a kill by Covach and an ace by Grant Lynch. The Lancers maintained their lead throughout the rest of the set though, and a final kill allowed them to take the first set 25-20.

The Lancers picked up an early lead at the start of the set, leading the Lions 10-2. However, after trailing 14-6, the Lions earned four consecutive points with four straight aces from Mend to bring the score to 14-10. Despite one more point by the Lions, the Lancers earned two more points to enter the mid-set break leading 16-11. The Lancers continued to lead the Lions taking the second set 25-19.

The Lancers again had a strong start in the third set, leading the Lions 10-5. The Lions picked up their game and eventually brought Windsor's lead to just one point, 12-11, after an ace by Alexander Grzegorczyk. The Lancers again led the Lions into the mid-set break by a score of 16-14. A huge kill by Andrew Shotbolt tied the game late in the set 20-20. After a point by the Lancers, another kill by the Lions, this time by Lynch, tied the game again 21-21. The Lions comeback attempt fell short by just three points though, as the Lancers took the final set 25-22.

Lynch led the Lions earning 11 points, four blocks and one dig. Andrew Tauhid, Covach, and Shotbolt each earned seven points in the loss. The Lancers were led by Pierce Johnson who earned 13 points, and three assists.

The Lions will be playing in their final two games of the regular season on the road on Feb. 22 and Feb.23. The first game will be against their cross-town rivals the Toronto Varsity Blues at Goldring Centre. The game is scheduled to start at 8pm.
