LIONS FALL TO LANCERS IN FINAL HOME GAME OF REGULAR SEASON

The York University women's volleyball team were defeated 3-0 by the Windsor Lancers on Sunday afternoon at Tait Mackenzie Centre.

The Lions honoured graduating players, Cadence Currie and Celeste Witzell at the start of today's final home game of the regular season. Witzell led the Lions in points against the Lancers earning 9.5 points, and one block, while Currie earned five points and eight digs.

The Lions opened up the first set leading the Lancers 4-2 after a service ace by Sarah Williams. Both Windsor and York exchanged leads at the start of the set, but the Lancers quickly picked up a five-point lead at 14-9, leading them into the mid-set break leading the Lions 16-10. The Lancers opened up a big lead on the Lions at 22-11, which seemed to have shaken up the Lions' earlier momentum. Three more points by the Lancers led them to take the first set 25-11.

Olivia Kim earned the first point for the Lions at the start of the second set. A kill by Kayla Clennon and a service ace by Cadence Currie gave the Lions a 5-4 lead on the Lancers. After the Lancers started leading the Lions, a huge kill by Tara Leithead tied the game 14-14, however the Lancers earned two more points to enter the mid-set break leading 16-14.

After the break, the Lions earned three consecutive points to lead 17-16. The Lancers added six more points to lead the Lions 22-17. The Lions managed to come back from the five-point deficit and tied the game with an ace by Clennon. After a point by the Lancers, a kill by Kim tied the set again 23-23. After a York service error, an attack error by the Lancers tied the set 24-24, but the final two points went to the Lancers and allowed them to take the set 26-24.

During the third set, a kill by Celeste Witzell gave the Lions an early 5-4 lead. Despite the Lancers tying the set at 5-5, Witzell once again gave the Lions back the lead with a block. For the first time in the game, the Lions entered the mid-set break leading the Lancers 16-14. Despite a strong attempt by the Lions at the end of the final set, the Lancers took the set 25-21.

In addition to the strong play of the Lions two graduating seniors, Kayla Clennon earned 8.5 points, two digs, and one block, while Sarah Williams had 7 points, and 10 digs. The Lancers were led by Ally Winik who had 11 points, and four blocks.

The Lions will be playing in their final two games of the regular season on the road, on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. The first game will be against the Toronto Varsity Blues at Goldring Centre. The game is scheduled to start at 6pm.
