LIONS FALL TO GEE-GEES IN FIRST ROUND OF OUA PLAYOFFS

The York University men's basketball team fell in the first round of the OUA playoffs after a dropping a road game by a score of 92-77 to the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Wednesday evening at Monpetit Hall in Ottawa, Ont.
 
The Gee-Gees picked up an early lead, adding seven points at the start of the first quarter before the Lions were able to get on the scoreboard. Just three minutes into play, the Gee-Gees picked up a nine-point lead, 17-8 over the Lions and even though Lions picked up their offense they managed to hold onto their lead to end the first quarter up 35-24 over the Lions.  
 
The Gee-Gees continued to control the play throughout a more defensive second quarter, adding another 20 points while the Lions responded with 11. With a minute left until the halftime mark, the Gee-Gees picked up 21-point lead, leading the Lions 55-34. One final basket by the Lions left them trailing 55-36 at the half.
 
The Lions pressed in the second-half outscoring the Gee-Gee 41-37, however Ottawa's strong first half allowed them to maintain a comfortable lead over the Lions. The Gee-Gees finished the third quarter leading 77-56 and defeated the Lions 92-77 to advance to the quarterfinals.
 
Chevon Brown had a strong game, leading the Lions with 25 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, while DeAndrae Pierre was close behind with 23 points, five rebounds and two assists, and Gianmarco Luciani had 15 points, six rebounds and three assists. The Gee-Gees were led by Guillaume Pepin who earned 21 points and five rebounds.
 
The Lions saw tremendous growth this season, improving greatly from a 2-21 record in 2017-18. This year the Lions finished with an 8-15 record and advanced to the OUA playoffs for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Despite the loss, the future looks bright for the young Lions as they will look build off this season and make a run up the OUA East standings next year.
