The York University women's volleyball team were defeated 3-1 by the Queen's Gaels on Sunday afternoon at Tait Mackenzie Centre.

The Gaels topped the Lions in the first two sets, however a strong third set by the Lions forced the game into a fourth set. Despite a comeback attempt by the Lions, the Gaels took the final set to win the game 3-1.

The Lions opened the match leading the Gaels with a kill by middle
Aleksandra Steins. The Gaels led the Lions 2-1 shortly after and maintained their lead throughout the set. By the mid set break, the Gaels were leading 16-11, however the Lions nearly tied the game earning four consecutive points trailing 18-16 near the end of the set. Despite a strong attempt by the Lions, the Gael took the first set 25-19.

The Gaels had a strong second set, leading the Lions 16-6 by the midway break, and picking up their largest lead, by 14 points, 21-7. The large lead allowed the Gaels to win the set 25-12, and lead the Lions 2-0.

The Lions picked up an early 3-1 lead at the start of the third set after an attack error by the Gaels and a service ace by Steins. The Lions entered the mid set break leading the Gaels 16-10 after a huge kill by
Kayla Clennon. The Lions earned their largest lead on the Gaels by 11 points, 23-12. A service ace by
Chiara Da Silva ended the set with the Lions winning 25-15 and trailing 2-1.

The Gaels led the Lions throughout the first half of the fourth set to enter the mid set break leading 16-7. Despite the strong lead, the Lions earned four consecutive points to bring the set to just two points with the Gaels leading 22-20. A final strong attempt by the Lions nearly brought the match to a fifth set, however the Gaels earned the final point off a Lions' service error to win 25-22.

Celeste Witzell led the Lions with 12 points and seven digs. Clennon earned 10 points, and four digs, while Steins had nine points, one dig, and two blocks. Leading the way for the Gaels was Caroline Livingston with 19.5 points and 10 digs.

The Lions will be travelling to St. Catharines, Ont. on Feb. 9 to take on the Brock Badgers in their next game. The game is scheduled to start at 1pm.
