The York University Lions men's soccer team was held scoreless in their first game of the season, as they tied the Guelph Gryphons 0-0 on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Â
In what always seems to turn into a physical matchup this game was no different, with three yellow cards handed out and 14 fouls committed throughout the game. The Lions saw great defensive coverage from veteran defenders
Josh Kiselyov and
Francesco Sinopoli as Guelph was held to no corner kicks, and two shots on net in the first half.
Â
By the end of the match York was outshot 9-6, however the best opportunity of the game came from the Lions. Third-year forward
Dieu Merci Yuma found himself on the receiving end of a pass from
Omar Marzouk in the Gryphons penalty box in the 81
st minute. Yuma back heeled the ball into the back of the net, but the goal was eventually ruled offside.
Â
Lions goalkeeper
Mike Argyrides made two crucial saves in the first half, keeping his side afloat, and earning his first clean sheet of the season.
Â
The Lions will now look ahead to another tough matchup as they play host to the McMaster Marauders on Thursday night for our Frosh Frenzy event. Kick-off is set for 8:15pm at Alumni Field.
