NO. 4 LIONS SET TO FACE BROCK FOR YORK9 FC DAY

The undefeated York University Lions men's soccer team will look to keep that streak alive this weekend when the squad plays host to the Brock Badgers on Sunday night at York9 FC Day.

The contest will kick-off at 8:15pm at Alumni Field following the women's game against the same opponent. Fans can also tune in live online on OUA.tv. They will also be in action on Friday night against the Western Mustangs at the same time.

The Lions, ranked No. 4 nationally, continue to dominate their OUA opponents. Winners of 12 straight OUA West Division titles and the last two conference championships, they are currently riding a 38-game unbeaten streak against the OUA (including regular season and playoffs), a run that stretches back more than two years to a 2-1 defeat against Guelph on Aug. 30, 2017.

So far this year they are 2-0-1. Following a scoreless draw with the Gryphons in the season opener they have reeled off two victories, defeating the rival McMaster Marauders 1-0 at home and the Waterloo Warriors 4-0 on the road.

The Badgers have been no match for the Lions in recent years and are seeking their first win against York since a 1-0 victory in the season opener in 2009, a streak that stretches 19 games. They came close last year in a pair of one-goal contests, falling by scores of 3-2 and 2-1, but have been outscored by the powerhouse Lions 63-10 in those 19 contests.

Like the Lions, the Badgers have yet to lose this season with a 1-0-2 mark through three games. Their win was by a 2-1 score over the Windsor Lancers, sandwiched between a pair of ties with Waterloo (2-2) and Guelph (1-1). Two seasons ago they were a playoff team, but they missed out by a single point last year and finished in seventh place in the OUA West.

The Lions are the only team in the conference yet to concede a goal thanks to a strong defence, led by OUA West all-stars Josh Kiselyov and Francesco Sinopoli and backstopped by goalkeeper Mike Argyrides.

The strong offensive attack has been slow to get going with five goals in three games, but they did score four in their most recent outing. Christopher Jacovou leads the team with a pair of tallies, while Lucas Puntillo, Michael Thornton and Merci Yuma have accounted for the other three.

The Badgers have also netted five goals in three contests. Jared Agyemang, a former OUA West all-star and U SPORTS all-Canadian with the Guelph Gryphons, has three of them to lead the team.

After this weekend's games, the Lions will head out for four straight road games over the next three weeks, beginning with a trip to Waterloo, Ont., to face the Laurier Golden Hawks next Saturday. They won't return home until Oct. 6, when the Warriors come to Alumni Field for a 8:15pm game.
