The York University Lions field hockey team secured back-to-back wins against the Guelph Gryphons and McGill Martlets on Sunday afternoon, winning 3-0 and 10-0, respectively, at Queen's University.
The two wins give the Lions a second place standing in the league, trailing only the Toronto Varsity Blues by three points.
The Lions first game against Guelph was a must win matchup; for the Gryphons were aiming for a top two spot in the OUA. Fortunately for the Lions they were triumphant over their opponents.
The game was scoreless in the first half of action.
The Lions opened the scoring with an amazing unassisted goal from forward
Lexi Hannah in the sixth minute of the third quarter. Hannah continued to dominate the scoreboard with two more unanswered goals. One in the 14
th minute of the fourth quarter, and the other in the final minutes of the game.
Hannah scored her first hat-trick of the season, and a triumphant 3-0 victory over the Gryphons.
The second game of the day came against the McGill Martlets, and it did not fail to disappoint.
The game was not scoreless for long with an opening unassisted goal from Lions forward
Paige Koochin in the sixth minute of the match. Midfielder
Kyra McKinnon followed suit with a goal of her own in the 14
th minute.
The game continued to be one-sided in the Lions favour, with goals in the second quarter coming from midfielder
Marella Greco in the 22
nd minute, and defender
Sarah Powell in the 30
th minute. The Martlets failed to find an answer in the first half.
The Lions continued their blazing goal streak in the third quarter, with three more goals coming from midfield
Frankie St. Louis in the 31
st minute, forward Hannah in the 44
th minute, and forward
Haley Bannister in the 45
th minute. The Lions were up 7-0 at the end of the quarter.
The Lions did not ease up as Hannah scored her second goal in the game in the 52
nd minute, giving her a total of five points on the day, placing her fourth overall in scoring in the OUA. Midfielder
Natalie Winter scored in the 53
rd minute, and the game was closed out with Bannister's second goal of the match in the 56
th minute.
The Lions will aim to keep their win streak alive and have the same intensity when they travel to London, Ont., to play against the Western Mustangs on Saturday at 12:30pm
