On Friday night the York University Lions women's rugby team kept their win-streak strong as they closed their regular season overpowering the Laurier Golden Hawks by a score of 78-7 at Alumni Field.
They were coming off of a hot win away defeating the Waterloo Warriors 39-5 and finished the regular season a perfect 4-0 on the year and in first place in the OUA Russell Division.
With it being
Jessica Ho,
Brooke Jensen and
Michela Stratton's final game of the regular season, they did not disappoint.
The game opened to a thrilling start with the first try of the match scored by
Brittany Ediagbonya just one minute in. Five minutes later there was a try by
Esther Sivalingam and a conversion from
Natasha Naismith. The Lions kept up the same intensity with their third try in a row scored by Ho in the ninth minute of the game. Naismith scored her second conversion of the game leading the Golden Hawks 19-0.
The Lions' pressure did not let up with another try scored by
Taylor Bradley in the 13
th minute of the game, followed by another easy conversion score from Naismith.
The Lions did not let up and continued to dominate the first half with another try from Bradley scoring her second of the game. The Golden Hawks played hard and had a strong push that ended in a try from Abbe Stacey in the 24
th minute but the Lions answered back quickly with another try from Stratton.
The first half concluded with the Lions holding a lead of 40-7.
The Lions did not ease off in the second half. Although the Golden Hawks gained possession of the ball early, it was quickly regained by the Lions which resulted in a try from
Brooke Jensen opening the score in the second half, followed by another conversion from Naismith.
The second half was predominantly in the Golden Hawks' end and resulted in another try from
Rayann D'Aguiar followed by another conversion for a 54-7 lead. The game ended with three more tries: one from
Ally Govier in the 65
th minute, one from Ediagbonya, her second of the night, and another from Stratton, also her second. Naismith had all of the conversions and added another three points on a penalty goal.
The Lions will play their first playoff game next weekend on the road, and their opponent is to be determined.
