The York University Lions football team was defeated by a score of 57-19 by the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
The first quarter was a tight affair with each team putting together one scoring drive and otherwise punting. The Warriors got on the board first when Tre Ford completed a 46-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Ternowski for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead mid-way through the frame, and
Mitchell Mackett was good on a 10-yard field goal with two seconds left to cap a seven-play, 95-yard drive with three points.
The Lions got the ball back after a forced fumble on the first drive of the second, but two plays later Waterloo's Tyrell Ford picked off York starting quarterback
Noah Craney and returned it all the way to the house to swing the momentum and make it 14-3. The Warriors added another touchdown and a field goal before the Lions rounded out the scoring in the second quarter on a three-yard touchdown pass from Craney to
Kadeem Hemmings that put the score at 24-10 heading into the break.
The two teams traded touchdowns in the third quarter. Ford and Ternowski hooked up again on a 28-yard score, and then
Victor Belanger recorded his first career touchdown with a 31-yard major from Craney with 5:28 to go.
Warriors running back Dion Pellerin scored his second touchdown of the game with 11 seconds left in the quarter and then Waterloo took over in the fourth with another two touchdowns and a field goal.
Craney went 15-of-30 for 258 yards, with the two touchdowns as well as three interceptions. He was injured to start the fourth quarter and did not return.
His favourite target was
Alex Daley, who had 115 yards on just five catches to lead all players. Running back
Bryan Deans had a career game with 12 rushes for 72 yards.
Pellerin had a strong game with 155 rushing yards on 18 carries, scoring a trio of touchdowns. He added another 24 yards on three receptions. Ford continued his strong season with 250 passing yards on 18 completions, as well as three touchdowns and one interception.
The Lions fell to 0-6 with the loss. The Warriors are now 4-1 on the year and tied for second in the OUA standings.
The Lions head into their bye week next week and will return to action on Friday, Oct. 11 when they host the 50
th annual Red & Blue Bowl against the Toronto Varsity Blues under the lights at Alumni Field.
