LIONS SNAP SKID WITH OT WIN OVER BADGERS

Nik Coric's goal just 90 seconds into overtime snapped the York University Lions men's hockey team's losing streak and gave them a 5-4 victory over the Brock Badgers at the Seymour-Hannah Centre on Thursday night.

The Lions built an early lead and then pulled off the triumph after the Badgers came all the way back from being down four goals.

The home team outshot the visitors 19-10 in the first period but it was the Lions who emerged with a 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals 19 seconds apart. Tyler Higgins opened the scoring at 13:37 and Xavier Pouliot potted the second at 13:56, the only two goals of the frame.

The Lions were at it again in the second period. Just over seven minutes in, Justin Bean scored for a 3-0 lead and, less than one minute later, Brandon Yeamans put the puck past Brock goaltender Mario Culina to make it 4-0.

Momentum shifted quickly after that and the Lions held just a one-goal lead by the time the period was done. Tyler Rollo got it started for his team at 11:23, Jordan Sambrook cut the deficit to two on a power play at 15:52 and two-and-a-half minutes later Rollo scored his second of the game to make the score 4-3.

A little over three minutes into the final period the Badgers had another power play and capitalized, as Ayden MacDonald tied the game at four apiece with his goal.

The rest of the third played out without any more scoring, paving the way for Coric's heroics in the extra frame.

Goaltender Cole Ceci had a strong performance in net to earn the win, turning aside 37 of the 41 shots he faced. Culina was much less busy, making 23 saves in the loss.

The Lions will be back in action on home ice on Friday night when they welcome the Guelph Gryphons to Canlan Ice Sports. Puck drop is set for 7pm.
