The York University Lions women's basketball team saw its five-game winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night with a 73-55 loss to the No. 8 nationally ranked Brock Badgers in St. Catharines, Ont.
The Lions came out strong in the first quarter of the game with a series of three-pointers from
Megan Stewart,
Lauren Golding and
Emma Jonas to gain the early lead. The Badgers scored baskets of their own to keep it a close game, but the Lions prevailed and outscored the Badgers in the first quarter 15-12.
In the second quarter, the Lions continued their dominance over the Badgers. A jump shot from
Cyanna King helped the Lions widen their lead 21-16, followed by another three-pointer from Golding. The Badgers came close to tying the score with a three-pointer from Kristen Gallant, but the Lions prevailed in the second quarter by two points and led at the half 29-27.
In the third, the Lions game turned around. The Badgers gained the lead for the first time in the game.
Katrina Collins-Samuels and Golding helped the Lions regain the lead, but a jump shot from Melissa Tatti and Jenneke Pilling started a run and the Badgers led after three quarters, 51-43.
In the final quarter, the Lions continued to trail from the Badgers despite their baskets, but with missed jump shots and three-pointers, the Badgers outscored the Lions and cruised to the win.
The Lions dropped to 10-7 with the loss and have five games remaining as they fight for playoff positioning in the OUA. They play their next game on Saturday in Hamilton, Ont., against the McMaster Marauders at 1pm in an important game for playoff seeding.
