The York University Lions men's hockey team suffered a 9-4 loss at the hands of the Western Mustangs at home on Saturday night.
In what was another scoring frenzy for the Lions, six of the games 13 goals came within the first period.
Â
It was the Lions who got on the board early with a pair of goals in less than three minutes. Lions defenceman
Jack Goranson and forward
Dylan Riley put away a goal each to give their side a 2-0 lead eight minutes into the first period.
Â
After the Mustangs responded with a goal to cut the deficit to one,
Justin Bean reinstated his sides two goal advantage off an assist from Goranson to make the score 3-1, but the Mustangs would not end the period on that note.
Â
Back-to-back goals in the span of a minute, the first coming off a power-play, resulted in a first intermission tied at 3-3.
Â
It was all Western for the most part from then on. The Mustangs took their first lead of the game in the second period after Ethan Syzpula assisted on both his teammates goals to end the frame up 5-3.
Â
To open the third the Mustangs needed only 1:51 to double their lead over the home team, followed by two more goals before Lions
Peter De Coppi brought one back for the fourth and final Lions goal. Mustangs' Reed Morrison put the game to bed with his sides ninth goal, sealing the win.
Â
The Lions are now 5-13-1-0 on the season while the Mustangs move to 7-7-3-0 in the OUA West division standings.
Â
The team will continue their home stand at Canlan next weekend as they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday night. Puck drop is schedule for 7pm.
