The York University Lions men's volleyball team dropped a straight-sets decision to the Queen's Gaels in Kingston, Ont., on Saturday afternoon.
In the first set, the Gaels scored the first point off of a serve error, but
Andrew Tauhid came back with a great kill to equalize the game early. The Lions gained the lead with a series of Gaels' mistakes, followed by a kill from
Andrew Shotbolt. However, the lead didn't last long as the Gaels continued to earn points to regain the lead and finish the first set with a 25-19 score.
In the second set, both teams were jostling for the lead until the Gaels gained four straight points starting with kills from Adam Boljkovac and Zachary Hutcheson followed by a service ace and a Lions attack error. The Lions fell short as the Gaels were too far ahead and ended the second set with 25-18.
In the final set, things were looking up for the Lions as they earned an early lead. Serve errors from the Gaels, and an ace from
Grant Lynch helped the Lions gain a 5-3 edge. But once again, their lead didn't last long as the Gaels scored five points in a row. As the set went in, the Lions played hard in the final game as the score was getting closer and closer. The score was 30-30, but a kill from Boljkovac gave the Gaels a 31-30 lead. The Lions garnered a point from a Gaels mistake. Sadly, a kill from Erik Siksna followed by a Lions error, gave the Gaels the edge to win the final set 33-31.
Aleksander Grzegorczyk and Shotbolt earned the most with 11 points each, followed by Tauhid with eight points.
The Lions play their next game this Sunday at 3pm in Kingston, Ont., against the RMC Paladins looking to snap a four-game skid.
