The York University Lions women's volleyball team earned its second consecutive win with a 3-1 victory over the Queen's Gaels on the road in Kingston, Ont., on Saturday afternoon.
In the first set, kills from
Olivia Kim and
Aleksandra Steins helped the Lions gain the early lead. The Lions didn't lead for long with a kill from Arielle Palermo followed by a Lions attack error helped the Gaels come back to tie the score. Both teams were fighting for the lead, but with a series of attack errors from the Gaels the Lions were able to gain the edge and widen it. A final kill from Kim sealed the Lions 25-22 win in the first set.
In the second set, the Lions once again came out strong. A kill from
Kayla Clennon helped the Lions gain the lead, but the Gaels were hot on their trails with kills of their own, and they quickly began to lead. The Lions were trying to come up and tie and were only down by one point with a kill from
Sarah Williams, but the Gaels outscored the Lions to widen their lead and won 25-20 in the second set to level the match.
The third set was when things started to turn around for the Lions as they gained a four-point lead early and kept the lead up as they finished the third with a 25-21 score.
The final set started the same as the first three with the Lions once again gaining the early lead. An attack error from Palermo gave the Lions a big 22-15 lead over the Gaels, and they capitalized off of it as they finished the game with a kill from Clennon to end the set 25-18.
Kim led all Lions with 20 points, on 17 kills, two service aces and one block, and added 15 digs. Clennon was just behind her with 19 points on 15 kills, two service aces and two blocks.
Chiara Da Silva finished with 37 assists and 12 digs.
The Lions improved to 7-6 with the win and moved to within striking distance of the third-place Gaels in the standings with four points to make up and two games in hand.
The Lions will stay in Kingston for a Sunday game against the RMC Paladins beginning at 1pm.
