The York University Lions women's basketball team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday night with a 67-64 loss to the Carleton Ravens in their OUA first round playoff game.
The 10
th-seeded Lions had their chances and built a sizeable first-quarter lead, but the experienced Ravens, seeded seventh and winners of back-to-back OUA championships in 2017 and 2018, clawed back and ultimately came out on top.
The Lions came out flying in the first, scoring 16 points in the first 5:30 of the contest to race out to a 16-3 lead. Their pace slowed after that, however, and the Ravens began chipping away at the deficit, getting it to nine by the end of the frame.
There was a flurry of offence from both teams to start the second and the Lions continued to maintain their nine-point advantage, but the offence eventually stagnated and the Ravens scored eight unanswered points to close the gap to just one, at 29-28, heading into the halftime break.
Carleton took the lead on a quick basket to start the third but the Lions quickly stole it back. After trading baskets back and forth, the Ravens began pulling away and didn't relinquish the lead again until it was tied 55-55 at the midpoint of the final frame. However, the Lions were never able to get back out in front and the Ravens held on down the stretch to close out the victory.
Lauren Golding led all Lions with 12 points and added nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block.
Megan MacLeod had 11 points and
Megan Stewart added 10.
Carleton's leading scorer was Madison Reid with 17 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.
The Ravens have now advanced to the OUA quarter-finals and will play their city rivals, the Ottawa Gee-Gees, in the next round this weekend.
