Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

LIONS SWEEP WATERLOO, QUALIFY FOR SECOND ROUND WITH 3-0 WIN

A goal 29 seconds into the contest eventually stood as the game-winning goal for the No. 10 nationally ranked York University Lions women's hockey team in a 3-0 victory over the Waterloo Warriors at Columbia Ice Field in Game 2 of their OUA quarter-final series.

The win ended the series and sent the Lions to the second round of the OUA playoffs. It's the first trip to the second round for the Lions since the 2011-12 season, which is also their most recent playoff appearance.

The aforementioned early goal game off the stick of Kara Washer, taking a feed from Sarah Power on the first shift of the game to give York a 1-0 advantage.

Good defence and solid goaltending from Serena Vilde in the York net kept the Warriors off the scoreboard in a must-win game, and it opened the door for the Lions to extend their advantage in the final period.

They did just that – with Power deflecting a Taylor Davison shot behind Waterloo goaltender Mikayla Schnarr at 11:48 of the third period to make it 2-0 Lions.

The third York goal was into an empty net off the stick of Courtney Gardiner.

Vilde would remain perfect until the final buzzer, posting her first shutout since Oct. 19. She made 22 saves.

The Lions now await the remainder of the OUA first round series to complete before their seeding and opponent is determined in the next round of the playoffs.
