The York University Lions football team relinquished the Argo Cup for the first time since 2016 on Saturday as the rival Toronto Varsity Blues won the 51
st Red & Blue Bowl 25-2 at Varsity Centre.
Neither team was able to get much offence going throughout the afternoon and the Lions actually led the Blues in that category, 311-177. But turnovers did them in as the Lions had seven, compared to just one for the Blues.
The Lions fall to 0-4 on the season while the Blues improved to 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blues took an early 10-0 lead after a field goal by Chris MacLean and a 49-yard pick six by Cody Hale.
- The highlight of the first half was a touchdown-saving interception by Daniel Amoako in the endzone that he returned 24 yards.
- Before the end of the second quarter the Lions finally got on the scoreboard after pinning the Blues deep in their own end and forcing them to take a safety.
- The third quarter began with an eventful sequence of events. York receiver Gabriel Appiah-Kubi thought he had scored a touchdown, but an offensive pass interference call was made and it was taken off the board. Quarterback Noah Craney was stripped on the following play and the Blues took over with strong field position. A few plays later MacLean attempted a 25-yard field goal that went wide left but out the back of the endzone for a rouge.
- The only offensive score of the fourth quarter was a 4-yard touchdown reception by Nolan Lovegrove. BLU
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Rookie Avontae McKoy accounted for 115 yards of offence, rushing for 81 yards on 17 carries and adding 34 yards on three receptions.
- Defensive lineman Kevin Musai had an impressive performance with a team-high six solo tackles, including two for a loss of eight yards.
- Craney went 13-of-27 for 133 yards and the one interception.
- Toronto quarterback Clay Sequeira struggled to find his receivers, completing just 13 of 34 passes for 116 yards. He threw the touchdown pass to Lovegrove midway through the fourth quarter.
