LIONS UNBEATEN STREAK SNAPPED BY GEE-GEES

ARPAN KAUR // yorkulions.ca

The No. 2 nationally ranked Ottawa Gee-Gees rode their two goals to a win over the No. 9 nationally ranked York University Lions women's soccer team, snapping York's six-game unbeaten streak Sunday afternoon at York Lions Stadium.

The Gee-Gees demonstrated why they are the leading defensive team of the OUA, limiting York to five shots. It was the first time York was limited to under 10 shots since their Sept. 25 loss to Ottawa.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The game started off with Ottawa gaining control of the game's offensive action with six of eight shots on goal, affirming their OUA lead of 162 shots.
  • Ottawa's defence lived up to their reputation early in the game. Their first shot coming in the 35th minute from Jotam Chouhan, sent wide right of the net.
  • OUA leading scorer Emma Lefebvre was an impactful presence for the Gee-Gees, continuing her pace by notching the first goal of the game in the first half's stoppage time.
  • Maia Torelli of York had their best chance of the game, nearly tying the game, but shooting it wide right of the net in the late second half.
  • Cassandra Provost scored the second goal of the afternoon for the Gee-Gees, making it her seventh of the season. The goal puts her in the same conversation with Lefebvre, tying for third place with Hannah Harkin on the OUA leader board for goals scored.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Emma Lefebvre scored her 12th goal of the season, leading the OUA in goals.
  • Ottawa outshot the Lions 15-5, 10 of which were shots on goal.
  • Lions keeper Patricia Vrysellas earned the player of the game nod, making eight saves on 10 shots.
LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will return to action against the Queen's Gaels at York Lions Stadium on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6 pm. They face-off with another one of their OUA East rivals in a two-game home-and-home matchup.
