The No. 5 nationally ranked York University Lions field hockey team had their season come to an end Saturday afternoon when they dropped the OUA semifinal by a razor-thin 2-1 margin to the No. 2 Toronto Varsity Blues at the Back Campus Fields on the U of T campus.
With the loss, the Lions season comes to an end after a 4-2-2 regular season record, which included multiple contests against Toronto throughout the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Blues opened the scoring in the third minute as Evianne Rovers buried a rebound off a penalty corner.
- The Lions responded, though, as standout first-year Caitlin Miller found the back of the net for her second goal of the season and first-career OUA playoff marker, also off a penalty corner opportunity.
- A scoreless second quarter saw the game deadlocked at 1-1 at halftime.
- OUA leading scorer Sam McCrory notched the eventual game-winner in the 45th minute off another penalty corner chance.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Blues will host the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA final next Sunday, Nov. 7 at Back Campus at 2 pm. The winner of the OUA final will host the Canada West champion Victoria Vikes in the 2021 U SPORTS national championship, Nov. 12-14.
