The York University Lions men's soccer team put a cherry on top of their regular season with a win over the Queen's Gaels Sunday afternoon at Richardson Stadium.
The Lions finished strong, maintaining their season-ending nine-game unbeaten streak, good enough to hold off the Carleton Ravens and place first in the OUA East division with an 8-1-1 record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions started their last regular-season game with a barrage of offensive opportunities, the biggest of which came from Jon Alec Duenas, who had a wide-open net with the Gaels goalie out of sight in the 35th minute. Duenas was hunted down by two Gaels defenders, unable to take the shot.
- After the multiple chances at the net, the Lions were granted a golden opportunity to take the lead just minutes before halftime, after a Lions player was fouled in the box resulting in a penalty. Then Lions forward Soji Olatoye made no mistake, grabbing the 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute.
- Through the rest of the game, both teams held firm on the opposing netminders and defensive line, resulting in multiple scoring opportunities. Nonetheless, both teams played a tough defensive game, holding off the score at 1-0 until the end of the game.
LOOKING AHEAD
Up next for the Lions is a start to the 2021 OUA men's soccer playoffs, where they will face-off with the University of Toronto Varsity Blues (6-3-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at a time to be determined.
