NO. 3 LIONS DROP SECOND STRAIGHT TO NO. 2 VARSITY BLUES IN BATTLE OF RANKED TEAMS

The No. 2 nationally ranked Toronto Varsity Blues went two-for-two this week against the No. 3 York University Lions field hockey team as a tight contest between two of the best in U SPORTS resulted in a 2-1 win for the Varsity Blues at Alumni Field.

With the win, the Varsity Blues improve to 4-0-1 on the 2021 season, and have now won two of three contests in this four-game stretch between York and Toronto.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Toronto got on the board first with a shot by Sam McCrory that sailed past Serena Vilde in the York net for the game's opening goal 11:03 into the first quarter.
  • McKinley Kennedy added the second goal for Toronto seven minutes into the second quarter, getting her stick on an already-moving ball just enough to change its direction and roll it into an open area of the York net.
  • Then, Russem Thind answered back for York, getting them on the board five minutes later after re-directing a centering pass from Prava Sandhu into past Varsity Blues goaltender Deepi Gill, cutting the Toronto lead in half.
  • York's best chance to tie it came after Alyssa Brooks was awarded a penalty corner, and Frankie St. Louis let a blistering shot go slightly high of the Toronto net.
LOOKING AHEAD
