LIONS FALL TO LAKERS IN OUA QUARTERFINAL CONTEST

The York University Lions women's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Wednesday night with a 1-0 loss to the Nipissing Lakers in their OUA quarter-final contest in North Bay, Ont.

The seventh-seeded Lions were in tough against the second-seeded Lakers, who ended the regular season with just one loss and atop the OUA Central Division. The Lions entered the game with a 6-3-1 record, which put them third in the OUA East.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • There wasn't much action from either side in the first half. Nipissing got the first shot of the game off in the ninth minute, their only shot of the half. York recorded one shot as well, just minutes before the halftime whistle.
  • The pace picked up early in the second and York goalkeeper Patricia Vrysellas was busy as the Lakers recorded four good shots and two corner kicks in a 15-minute span.
  • The deadlock was finally broken in the 75th minute on a goal by Jennifer Milligan. She connected on a beautiful pass by Ashley Mlinaric into the box.
  • The Lions had one last good chance in the 90th minute after they were awarded a corner kick but Kalifornia Mitchell's shot was kicked harmlessly out of the box.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • The Lakers led the Lions in shots, 6-2. As a result, Vrysellas made five saves, including a point-blank beauty in the 57th minute that preserved a scoreless draw.
  • Sabrina Fabiano and Brook-Lynne Mitchell each had one shot on goal for the Lions.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions' season has come to an end, while the Lakers have advanced to the OUA semifinals and will host the Western Mustangs on Saturday.
