The York University Lions women's basketball team staged a furious comeback in the fourth quarter but came up just short in a 48-44 loss to the Ottawa Gee-Gees at Montpetit Hall on Saturday afternoon.
Facing the Gee-Gees for the second time in as many days, the Lions played a much better game in the tight loss to the perennial contenders, narrowly missing out on the upset.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The game was close through the first part of the opening half as the two sides traded baskets, but the Gee-Gees started to pull away after the first five minutes and built an 18-11 lead after first quarter.
- The Lions struggled to find the bottom of the basket in the second quarter and recorded just five points. They entered halftime trailing 30-16.
- The Lions played a much better third quarter thanks to Lauren Golding's six points, but it was the fourth where they really shone. Golding had another six points and added nine rebounds to help the Lions outscore the Gee-Gees 15-4 in the final frame. A made free throw by Cyanna King got the Lions to within three points, but that was as close as they would get.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Golding recorded a double-double for the second straight game, scoring 18 points and adding 14 rebounds. She was 10-of-15 from the free throw line.
- The low-scoring affair was a result of neither team shooting the ball well. The Lions shot 19 per cent from the floor and the Gee-Gees 31.7 per cent.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions have a bye week next weekend before making their debut at the Tait McKenzie Centre on Friday, Nov. 19 against the Nipissing Lakers. The game, which begins at 5:30pm, is the first of two against the squad from North Bay, Ont., with the second scheduled for the following day at 2:30pm.
