Soji Olatoye added a marker of his own, as the York Lions men's soccer team dispatched the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in their second matchup of the season-opening home and home between the two squads.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Prior to the game's opening, fans, players and staff observed a moment of silence for Jody Forno, a former member of the Lions men's soccer program and brother of team assistant coach Luca Forno, who tragically passed away in 2020.
- York began the game with an offensive flurry and controlled the game's pace with multiple chances. It eventually paid off, when Yuma feathered a perfect pass to Olatoye on a give-and-go play, with Olatoye sending the ball past Ontario Tech netminder Matthew Mattila for the game's opening goal the ninth minute.
- York would add a second marker from Yuma, after Jaytin Pabla was upended in the box by an Ontario Tech player, resulting in a penalty. Yuma took the shot and made no mistake, doubling York's lead in the 55th minute.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- The match-up is York's first with York Lions Stadium as its home turf, with a total of 703 Lions fans attending the monumental occasion.
- Lions netminder George Tzimas made five saves and cut off some crucial crosses during some pivotal points of the match-up, earning his first win of the OUA season.
LOOKING AHEAD
York heads back to the pitch next weekend, where they become familiar with another one of their OUA opponents, the RMC Paladins. After engaging in a home-and-home series with the Ridgebacks, the Lions will do the same with the Paladins, beginning with a contest in Kingston, Ont. on Thursday, Oct. 7.
