Despite a boisterous crowd at Alumni Field, the York University women's rugby team was not able to power its way over the McMaster Marauders Saturday night, falling short 47-10.
Prior to the team's final regular-season home game against McMaster, seven graduating Lions were honored during the Grad game. The lineup was lead by captain
Selena McCuaig, followed by
Ester Sivalingam,
Lynelle Vassell,
Jade Safos,
Faith Williams,
Denise Laghayi and
Armelle Folefack who were recognized for their years of dedication to the Pride.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Marauders opened the scoring of the match with three tries and two conversions in the first half. Ila Bett found the endzone at 6:00 to lead the Lions 5-0. Followed by two more tries by Jill Cope and Taylor Wood to lead by double figures, 19-3 at halftime.
- The Marauders continued their spree of tries into the second half, combining for another five tries and five conversions. However, the Lions were able to get on the scoreboard thanks to Maiyah Samson securing five points for the Lions, scoring the only try of the night for York. Natashia Start added another two points with a successful conversion.
- Ultimately, the Marauders added more offensive insurance in the second half and prevailed by 37 points.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions wrap up their season with a road contest in Waterloo, Ont. to play their final game of the 2022 OUA season against the Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, Oct. 8. The game is scheduled for 1 pm.
