LIONS PRESERVE UNDEFEATED SEASON WITH 1-0 WIN OVER WESTERN

ARPAN KAUR // yorkulions.ca

It's an undefeated regular season for the York University Lions men's soccer team.

Justin Cicchillo's lone goal of the match between York and the Western Mustangs stood out as the game-winning goal Sunday afternoon at Alumni Field. The goal was enough for the Lions to sport a 10-0-2 record, good for tops in the OUA West and second overall in the OUA.

The final regular season game was led by a graduation ceremony, honouring eight graduating athletes. The graduating lineup was led by Milo Djuricic, followed by Agostino Principato, Frankross Di Matteo, Agostino Greco, George Tzimas, Jon Alec Duenas, Mudaser Muhtaj, and Soji Olatoye.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lions took charge of the game in the first half outshooting the Mustangs 7-2, led by Vaughan Bianchi's three shots. However, the Lions could not follow-through and capitalize on any attempts at net, and the game remained scoreless at half.
  • Following numerous attempts in the opposition's territory, Cicchillo was able to make it pay off. He dribbled the ball into the Mustangs' box and made no mistake firing the ball past Sam Spoelstra in the 52nd minute, seizing a 1-0 lead.
  • The Mustangs saw most of their opportunities in the second half with four shots, but fell short in front of the Lions defence, and the goalkeeping of Tzimas.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
  • Cicchillo scored his seventh goal of the season in seven appearances, and leads ths Lions with the most goals scored in the 2022 OUA season.
  • The Lions outshot the Mustangs 11-6.
  • Tzimas stood tall between the posts making every stop while playing a full 60 minutes.

LOOKING AHEAD

The Lions will now head into playoff week. York will face-off against an undetermined opponent at Alumni Field Saturday, Oct. 29.
