In a time of the year usually containing continuous change, the York University Lions men's volleyball team has much to contend with in 2022-23. It begins with a familiar face patrolling the sideline, but in a new role.
David Ta, the Lions' assistant coach for the last five years, has now taken the reigns as the team head coach. Previous coach,
Nathan Groenveld, has been elevated into a senior management role within Athletics & Recreation.
The adjustment has been eased by his familiarity with the group. "It's been interesting so far," Ta said.
Ta says the Lions are getting to a point where the team is ready to compete with the best in the conference.
"Starting from the beginning to now, you can see that we've progressed. We've reached a critical point of our training block, but I can honestly say that we've reached our goal at this present moment."
Ta says his team is adapting to the change well, but having a familiar face return to the men's volleyball roster has been helpful in making the transition seamless for the team's younger faces.
Luke de Greeff, who previously left the team to compete at Camosun College in the B.C. collegiate circuit, will become a member of the Pride once more. That's been huge for the team, says Ta.
The Lions also receive first-team all-star
Andrew Tauhid back into the fold this season, returning for his fifth and final year of eligibility
. Jasraj Nijjar, fresh off competing at a Team Canada U21 camp, returns this year in a leadership role.
The Lions kick off their 2022 season this weekend, with a game at Tait McKenzie Centre against the RMC Paladins on Friday, Nov. 4.
