Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

LIONS START SLOW, FINISH STRONG IN FIRST WIN OF SEASON OVER RIDGEBACKS

The York University men's basketball team took down the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks in their home opener of the 2022-23 OUA season by a score of 94-85 on Saturday night at Tait McKenzie Centre.

With the win, the Lions earned their first victory of the campaign and their first overall since Mar. 11,, when they topped the Toronto Varsity Blues.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Ridgebacks got off to a hot start, leading the Lions 26-18 after one. The Lions were led by Prince Kamunga's 10 of the 18 Lions' points.
  • The Lions responded with a 7-1 run early in the second, cutting the deficit to 27-25.
  • The Ridgebacks once again found themselves up 10, but Lions rallied once again, going on a 19-9 run to tie the game 48-48. Elias Panagiotopoulos broke the deadlock with a swift, in-transition three-pointer to put the Lions ahead 51-49.
  • The Lions proceeded to commit a foul on a last-second heave before halftime resulting in three free throws for Ontario Tech, and a 52-51 Ridgebacks lead at the break.
  • The third quarter was a back-and-forth affair between the two squads. Tyler Pryce and Nathan Omoghan combined for 15 of the Lions 19 points in the third quarter to give the red and white a 70-66 advantage after three.
  • The Ridgebacks continued to hang around early in the fourth, but the Lions were able to pull away late and led by 12 before a last-second three brought Ontario Tech within single digits.
  • The Lions allowed just 33 second-half points en route to victory, and won the final three quarters by a combined score of 76-59.
  • York was led by three Lions with 20-plus points. Kamunga led the way with 35 points, four blocks, and three steals, followed by Pryce with 22 points and Travon Hamilton with 20.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:

"Our collective team effort was exceptional, especially being down two starters. So for our team to come together just speaks to our character and how badly they want to get this program back on track." — head coach Jermain Holness

LOOKING AHEAD:

The Lions will look to remain in the win column, as they are back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 16 to host the Toronto Varsity-Blues at the Tait McKenzie Centre. The tip-off is slated for 8pm.
