Alexandra Quaidoo's last minute game-winning goal was the difference maker for the York University Lions women's soccer team. She launched a strike in the 119
th minute, vaulting the Lions to victory, a berth in the OUA championship, and the U SPORTS championship in the process.
It was the first time all season Queen's gave up more than one goal in a game, and the Lions' offensive burst came at the most crucial time of the year.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Queen's couldn't have asked for a better start to the contest, opening the game with a penalty after Cecilia Way was fouled in the box by Brook-Lynne Mitchell after a fast break. The fifth-year converted her chance and made it 1-0 Gaels in the game's sixth minute.
- The theme for York in this game would be answering back quickly. They did it in the 15th minute off a perfectly placed corner, when Jotam Chouhan found some open space on the reception and knotted it up at 1-1 with her first of the playoffs.
- Queen's then took the lead early in the second half after some sustained pressure, and York had a response right away. Two minutes after Mattie Strickler made it 2-1 Gaels, Quaidoo tied it again after being sprung down the wing.
- Quaidoo then did it again. After a flurry of Lions chances, she deposited the game-winner with a long-range strike from the top of the box.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING
"We played a good game. We managed well, our best players were at their best, especially
Nia Fleming-Thompson,
Alexandra Quaidoo and
Jotam Chouhan. You know, with an ounce of belief, they can do great things. I am glad they finally found some belief in themselves." – head coach
Carmine Isacco
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions now await the winner of the Western Mustangs and Ottawa Gee-Gees to decide the OUA championship. York will travel to the winner of that game on Saturday, Nov. 5.
