TRIO OF LIONS EARN OUA ALL-STAR NODS AFTER STELLAR 2022 SEASONS

The York University Lions are well-represented on the OUA's football all-star ballot.

Three members of the Lions were named to OUA all-stars Wednesday afternoon – Alfred Olay, Jason Janvier-Messier and Matt Dean.

Olay, the Lions primary kick returner, had an outstanding season for the red and white in his sophomore campaign. He led the province in kick return yards with 739, more than 100 better than the 2nd-place finisher. He was also 8th in the OUA in kick return average, at 21.2 yards per return. As for punt returns, he wasn't too shabby in that department, either. The Courtice, Ont. native was 4th in the OUA in punt return yards, racking up 349. The highlight of Olay's season came in Week 3 against Carleton, where he ran back a missed field goal 119 yards for a touchdown. The engineering student was also a prominent member of the Lions receiving corps, leading them in receptions with 22 and receiving yards with 276.

Janvier-Messier was a key cog of the Lions defensive front four this season in his second year of eligibility. He amassed 25.5 total tackles, including 23 solo tackles, which led Lion defensive lineman. He also posted a team-leading four quarterback sacks, and also paced the team with 5.5 tackles for loss. In addition, the Beloeil, Que. native forced two fumbles. The 3rd-year psychology student's breakout performance came in Week 7 against the Windsor Lancers, where he posted 7 total tackles, including six solo, and a sack. He had a pair of sacks in the Lions Week 2 forfeit win over McMaster.

Dean, one of the anchors in the Lions linebacking corps and one of 12 graduating seniors, earns his first all-star selection in his final year as a Lion. He led the team with 47.5 total tackles, 41 of them solo. He was an excellent run-stopper for the Lions, clogging up the middle and not allowing running backs to enter the second level. Dean was either first or second in tackles in six of the Lions eight games this season. His biggest game, perhaps fittingly, came in his last game donning the red and white, when he posted 11 tackles in against the Ottawa Gee-Gees. The 4th-year Business & Society Major had one sack this season, and it came on Oct. 7 against the Windsor Lancers.

The three Lions all-stars will be formally honoured at the 2022 OUA Football Awards Luncheon on Nov. 10 at 11:00 am from Tim Hortons Field in Hamilton.
