Fresh off winning both York athlete of the week awards, the York University Lions field hockey team took on the Guelph Gryphons Friday night on home turf, drawing 1-1.
It was a game where the Lions opened the scoring early in the game and were not able to hold off a late surge from the Gryphons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lions wasted no time striking first, as Elyse Ives retrieved the rebound from the Gryphons netminder, Nicola Leech to set up Lexi Hannah for an open look at the net. This gave the Lions an early 1-0 lead at 3:06.
- The Lions continued to create great offensive opportunities, combining for 10 of their 12 shots in the first half, however, were not able to execute.
- The Gryphons found their momentum late in the fourth quarter, after being outshot 12-1, as the squad was able to capitalize on a goal by Abigail Warriner off a penalty corner taken by Taylor Wiebe at 54:20.
- With a minute left on the clock, Gryphons were rewarded with another penalty corner which played in a similar manner as the previous penalty, however, Serena Vilde's game-saving block kept the game tied at 1-1, upholding their undefeated title.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions hit the road for a three-game road trip, as they familiarize themselves with another Western Division opponent, the Waterloo Warriors. The game is set for Sunday, Sept. 25 at 2 pm.
