It was a matchup of a pair of OUA powerhouses in Guelph on Friday night as the No. 2 York University Lions did battle with the No. 5 Guelph Gryphons, looking to avenge a loss in last year's OUA championship game.
This was the first half of a weekend home-and-home series, and the first meeting since that 2021 OUA final that saw Guelph take the title with a 2-1 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gryphons weren't exactly gracious hosts to the Lions early. In the 13th minute, Jackson Sears put Guelph up 1-0 with his second of the year. This marked the first time all season the Lions found themselves behind.
- The scoreline remained 1-0 for over another hour of play, until the 77th minute. That's when Owen McKee scored his team-lead-tying 4th of the season, and doubled the Gryphons lead to 2-0.
- But the 2nd-best team in the nation wasn't done yet. In the 84th minute, 3rd-year midfielder Isaac Bradbury – who has been absolutely stellar early on for the Lions – stayed hot with his fourth of the young season to halve the Gryphons lead.
- Then, in the 89th minute rookie midfielder Mudaser Muhtaj knotted things up with the second of his freshman year as the Lions snatch a victory away from the Gryphons.
LOOKING AHEAD
The Lions will look to continue riding the high of Friday night's impressive comeback when they meet the Gryphons again on Sunday, Sept. 25, this time at York Lions Stadium. Kickoff is set for 3:15 pm
