LIONS LOSE TO LAKERS IN FIRST HOME GAME OF 2023

The York University Lions women's hockey team had their return to Canlan soured by the Nipissing Lakers In a 5-0 defeat. They scored two in the first period and three in the second en route to vicMalroy Dominico scored twice, with the other goals coming from Kara Den Hoed, Kamryn Groom and Aki Fujimori.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • York began the game on the right foot, drawing two penalties in the opening period. The Lions were unable to score on either advantage.
  • The Lakers opened the scoring through a counter attack which saw a shot saved by Emma Wedgewood off the stick of Megan Hayhurst. The rebound landed right on Kara Den Hoed's stick, and she made no mistake to make it 1-0 Nipissing. 
  • The second goal came shortly after as some sustained pressure forced the Lions back on their heels. Eventually, the puck came to Mallory Dominico, whose shot beat Wedgewood to make it 2-0 
  • Nipissing put the game out of reach with three goals scored in the second period. The first of which was scored by Kamryn Groom, who scored an easy tap-in goal around the halfway point of the period. The following two were scored in quick succession by Aki Fujimori and Dominco.
  • The Lions struggled to gain any traction offensively, creating very little offensively. The Lakers were able to lock it down in the final 20 and preserve the shutout in a 5-0 win. 

LOOKING AHEAD:

York will hope to get its first 2023 win when they return to Canlan Ice Sports on Thursday night to face the TMU Bold at 7:15pm.
