In a high-stakes encounter that would determine their postseason position, the York University Lions men's soccer squad faced off against the Brock Badgers for the second time in three days on Sunday – this time at York Lions Stadium – to close out the regular season.Â
The Lions knew they would participate in the OUA playoffs, but had no idea where they would slot into the postseason picture. Depending on the results of their match and those of the McMaster Marauders and Western Mustangs match, they had the potential to finish either first, third orÂ
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The match commenced with both teams displaying robust defensive capabilities, resulting in limited opportunities for offensive advancements on either end.
- The Badgers wasted little time grabbing the lead, as Conrad Czarnecki beat York keeper Alessio Carbone in the 13th minute to make it 1-0 Brock
- In the latter stages of the first half, York's Agostino Principato scored perhaps the easiest goal of his career after a cross from Tyler Attardo was headed back over to him right in front of goal. That finish levelled the score in the 36th minute, resulting in a 1-1 stalemate at the break
- Then, in the second half, Attardo found his way back on the scoresheet. In exact reverse to the first Lion goal, Principato got a short ball from Justin Hendriks and sent it over to an open Attardo. He made no mistake, giving York the lead and, in so doing, pushing them closer to top spot in the OUA West and a first-round bye.
- They would survive a late push from the Badgers, including a near miss in added time that would have given Brock a bye in Round 1, and held on for a the 2-1 victory, earning top spot in their division for the 15th straight season under head coach Carmine Isacco.
LOOKING AHEAD:
With their bye secured, this gives the Lions a full week of preparation in advance of their OUA quarter-final. The game is scheduled for Saturday, October 28 with the opponent being either the Guelph Gryphons or Western Mustangs. Check yorkulions.ca Thursday morning for all the match details.
