In a do-or-die clash that would determine their postseason fate, the York University Lions women's soccer team welcomed the Brock Badgers to York Lions Stadium on a high-stakes Sunday afternoon. The atmosphere was electric, as this match marked the final game of the regular season. A golden ticket to the playoffs awaited, making every pass, kick, and save a potential season-changer. The tension was palpable as both teams aimed to secure a spot in the postseason and, with it, send the other packing.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The game kicked off with both teams showcasing strong defensive prowess, leaving little room for offensive breakthroughs on either side.
- The Badgers drew first blood just over halfway through the opening half as Mekenna Williamson scored her second of the season to make it 1-0 Brock.
- Then, the Badgers were the beneficiaries of a strange goal off a cross that eluded York keeper Charlotte Phillips and gave Brock a 2-goal lead in the 32nd minute, one they would take to halftime. Sabrina Bisante was given credit for the goal.
- In the early stages of the second half York's Maia Torelli settled down an aerial cross and fired a low shot past the Badgers keeper to get York on the board, narrowing the deficit to 2-1.
- Just when it seemed like the Badgers were on the brink of victory, Torelli netted her 5th goal of the season, and second of the day. She took a through ball and used her strength to fend off the defender before sending one past the keeper, levelling the score at two apiece 87th minute.
- In the end, the match concluded with a 2-2 tie. The Badgers, who entered the match one point ahead of the Lions for the sixth and final OUA playoff spot, secured said playoff berth with the draw. As a result, the Lions miss the playoffs for the first time in nine seasons, going back to 2013.
LOOKING AHEAD:
With their playoff hopes dashed, the Lions will be gearing up for the next season. However, they bid farewell to several valued team members, including graduates Jade Vyfhuis, Serena McDonald, and Valentina Khan. As they turn the page to the next chapter, the team will be focused on building their roster and strengthening their strategies to come back even stronger in 2024.
