The York University Lions women's basketball team faced off against their fiercest rivals, the 0-5 Toronto Varsity Blues, on Friday afternoon, School Day, at Tait Mckenzie Centre. Both teams were looking to secure their first victory of the season and break their five and six-game losing streaks, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Lions got out to an early 5-2 lead in the game's opening minutes. However, Varsity Blues then went on a 14-3 run, and eventually took an 18-10 lead to the second.
- The visitors had a solid opening four minutes to the second, taking a 29-20 lead with just over six minutes to play before halftime. However, York mounted a run of its own, culminating with a Bilan Khadar bucket to take a 30-29 lead. York maintained that one-point edge at the break, leading 36-35.
- The third quarter was all Toronto as the Lions struggled to get the offence going early in the second half. York was held to just six third-quarter points, and the Blues sts opened up a 48-42 lead through three.
- The final quarter called for extreme neck-to-neck scores from both sides, with the visitors retaining their six-six-point lead in the first three minutes of the fourth. However, the Lions weren't done yet. A three ball from Kiara Leveridge made it 58-57 Toronto with just over two minutes to play. That was followed by another jump shot by Leveridge, giving the Lions a one-point lead, 59-58. A Khadar hoop made it a 61-58 game, before the Blues cut it back to one. Then, on the final play, Toronto's Ellen Ougrinov had a chance to win it, but her shot rimmed out at the buzzer, securing York's first one of the season, 61-60.
