Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

LIONS CANT BREAK MUSTANGS, FALL SHORT IN FINAL GAME OF 2023

The York University Lions women's hockey team entered the Saturday night contest against the Western Mustangs with high hopes of breaking a three game losing streak. A couple of solid power play showings from the Lions, but no finishing touch as the Mustangs won 3-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • The game was back and forth from the first drop of the puck with neither team really gaining the step up on their opponent. The Mustangs found themselves crashing the net on a rebound off Emma Wedgewood to net the first goal of the game.
  • York rebounded a few minutes later as Taylor Coward burst down the right wing feeding a perfect pass onto the stick of Abbey McMillan who put the puck top shelf, evening the game 1-1 to wrap up the first period.
  • The second period looked similar to the first as both teams created strong offensive chances, but. the goaltending on both ends of the ice kept the game even. It wasn't until Adeline Kristoff of the Mustangs fired a quick one at 14:26 to take back the lead.
  • York had an array of power play chances in the third period, going up 5-3 o the man advantage and getting the puck to the net, but they just couldn't muscle one by the Mustangs netminder, Brooke Vaccari. Western solidified their win with an empty net goal, taking the 3-1 win.

LOOKING AHEAD:

The York Lions have wrapped up their 2023 portion of the campaign and will make their return to Canlan Ice Sports on Friday, Jan. 5 to rematch against the Toronto Varsity Blues. Puck drops at 7:15 pm to start the 2024 half of the season.
