That's the last time the York University Lions men's basketball team had beaten the Carleton Ravens – before Saturday.
The Lions was in search of their fifth win of the campaign, and hoping to get back to .500 heading into the holiday break. The only thing standing in their way: the defending national champions and fourth-ranked team in the nation.
However, thanks to a lights-out performance from Elias Panagiotopoulos – who had game-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting 9-of-11 from beyond the arc – and a 25-point performance by Josh Noton, the Lions pulled out an 85-78 win over Carleton, their first over the Ravens since Feb. 5, 2010.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Neither team asserted itself offensively in the early going, with no one leading by more than two until the final seconds of the quarter. With the Ravens up 14-12, Evan Shadkami hit a deep three-pointer, followed by another from Travon Hamilton to give York an 18-16 lead with 2:11 remaining on the clock. Wazir Latiff delivered a three-point buzzer-beater to cap off a 6-0 Ravens run to close the quarter, securing a 22-18 lead as the first quarter came to a close.
- Down four in the second, the Lions went on an 11-0 run to take a 32-25 lead. A late three from the Ravens cut the Lions led to 35-32 at the break.
- The Lions jumped out to an early 9-3 third-quarter run, led by Panagiotopoulos connecting twice from beyond the arc and a three-point play from Noton, to grab a 47-38 edge. In all, Panagiotopoulos went five-for-five from beyond the arc, posting 15 of his 26 on the night in the quarter. He capped that off by sinking a buzzer-beating three,, extending the Lions edge to 64-57 after three.
- The Lions didn't let up in the fourth, leading by as many as 14 in the final frame. The Ravens made a late push, thanks to an 18-6 spurt to cut the lead to 80-78. However, a layup by Tyler Pryce and three successful free-throws by Noton cemented an 85-78 Lions victory.
LOOKING AHEAD:
The Lions wrapped up their fall term schedule on a high note, and will resume their season on Saturday, Jan 6 against the McMaster Marauders in Hamilton.. The first game of 2024 is slated for 8:00 pm.
